Perhaps nowhere in America is the partnership of architecture and landscape as evident or excellent as in modernist mecca Columbus, Indiana. This workshop will explore Columbus’s iconic design legacy as well as its more recent work—all of which provokes the profound opportunities and challenges of this fundamental relationship.

Learning Objectives:

• Appreciate the legacy of landscape and urbanism enabled by a corporate civic-minded model including its ongoing successes and challenges.
• Understand the design ambitions and strategies of mid-century modern landscape architects including their collaboration techniques with great contemporary architects.
• Explore the technical issues associated with the long-term maintenance, preservation and operation of modern and otherwise legacy works of landscape architecture.
• Explore a range of techniques for improving public realm through downtown planning, site design and temporary installations.
• Learn how the landscape architecture of Columbus can be a model for other places looking to disrupt cycles of urban disinvestment.
• Understand how design and programming can work within a culturally-significant setting while meeting contemporary needs.
