Urban areas of desert in the southwestern United States are at the forefront of climate change and expected to become uninhabitable by 2050. Regenerative ecological urbanism is a resilient approach to mitigate the impacts, restore the environmental ecosystem, and reconnect community to landscape infrastructure and productive landscape cultivation.

Learning Objectives:

• Identify how urban areas in the desert region of the southwestern United States are facing degradation and environmental challenges at the forefront of climate change, focusing on the Arizona desert region as a case study.
• Communicate the importance of integrating sustainable ecological restoration and resiliency to mitigate the impacts, in particular the rising temperature, urban heat island, and water shortage.
• Identify the ecologically regenerative development strategies and implementation as foundation of landscape and architecture interventions, on both regional and site scale.
• Examine strategies for creating an ecologically viable venture that yields economic benefit for self-sustainable and thriving community beyond the environmental restoration.
