Striking a balance between past and future has become increasingly relevant for landscape architects, as we work within the footprints of our forebears. This presentation explores methodologies ingrained into the sensitive rehabilitation of three legacy projects, incorporating 21st century thinking about inclusivity, resilience, and contemporary placemaking.

Learning Objectives:

• Learn from the methodologies of three significant cultural landscapes undergoing a critical period of change by three leading design practices facilitating robust multidisciplinary efforts.
• Identify varying techniques of stakeholder engagement in public process, avoiding competing and individual interests as well as peripheral controversy and roadblocks to building consensus.
• Assess integration of innovative strategies: accessibility, inclusiveness, stormwater management, energy solutions, and more flexible programming in order to meet the expanding needs and desires of shifting cultures and contemporary users.
• Explore the economic development value and determine benefits for rehabilitation versus redesign and how realistic and sustainable operations and maintenance are being considered for these legacy projects.
