Art and architecture deftly use exciting new tools, but are not forced to reconcile the precision of digital fabrication and the stochasticity of biological processes. As barriers to access digital fabrication technologies fall away, landscape architecture must contend with a basic disciplinary fact: Our mediums grow.

Learning Objectives:

• Learn about previous applications of digital fabrication in landscape architecture.
• Address challenges broached by designers and researchers when dealing with digital tools and biological materials.
• Grapple with the issues that arise when translating from digital to nonuniform, specifically biological physical media.
• Discuss the vast opportunity remaining in exploring possible landscape applications of techniques developed through art and architectural research.
