In an era of machine learning and automation, what is the appropriate and meaningful place for handmade objects? We bring together designers of wooden playgrounds, buildings, bridges, and gathering spaces who are adapting the skills, materials, and craft technologies of eras past to design and build unique contemporary places with great integrity.

Learning Objectives:

• Explore the intersections of technology with craft and discuss the constraints that automation and technology impose on our creativity.
• Understand the philosophical and practical opportunities that emerge when we choose authentic versus modern/imitative materials.
• Discover tangible benefits of deliberately designing “analog” and delaying the introduction of digital technologies until later in the design process.
• Learn how material selection and handwork can lead to the creation of spaces that are more engaging and culturally meaningful.
