This session rethinks historic and cultural interpretation and encourages us to design beyond typical signage. Presenters discuss how historic and cultural interpretation can be embedded in the design as key components that ground the project within the community’s identity and act as driving agents in storytelling and placemaking.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the benefits to integrating historic and cultural identity with contemporary design.
• Develop strategies for integrating a community’s historic legacy within a design across multiple project typologies and design phases.
• Understand how to balance integrate multiple narratives and site histories into a single project.
• Understand how to define “adverse effect” and understand where your project lands relative to that standard and how to use “adverse effect” as a design tool.
