From pictographs to studio pinups, graphic storytelling has been around for millennia. However, in today’s world it is far too easy for work to become “locked” in the computer. This session will explore ways in which academics and practitioners can hone the craft of narrative making and collaboration in design.

Learning Objectives:

• Examine the historical importance of graphic and narrative representation on walls, floors, and ceilings to form cognitive thought and show an accumulation of ideas.
• Explore the use of a narrative in design and how storytelling is taught as a methodological foundation to prepare landscape architects to create coherent and defendable designs.
• Understand how a collaborative practice of openness and exposure builds critical thinking and a purposeful design atmosphere.
• Discuss how to grow young designers in an environment that imbues storytelling with wall stories, floor stories, and three-dimensional models while balancing the analog design process with technology.
