Western Band Shoshone Tribal leaders strive to balance traditional heritage with contemporary cultural influences, while anticipating future impacts on traditional culture. In order to collaboratively design Tribal facilities, design professionals must to seek to understand Tribal values, design values, and economic pressures from the point of view of Tribal people.

Learning Objectives:

• Learn about cultural conflicts between Native peoples—Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Indian Nation, the frontier pioneers, and the U.S. Army.
• Understand outcomes of complex collaboration between historically disparate groups.
• Appreciate the results of collaborative visioning, programming, design between special interest group contributions, and planning considerations in a complex rural context.
• Understand the site's environmental challenges and historic changes in the Bear River channel location, destruction of native vegetation, and the historic uses.
