The 2014 Agricultural Act (“Farm Bill”) mandated that the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines provide specific dietary guidance for infants, toddlers, and pregnant women. Dietary reference intake values are used to guide dietary pattern recommendations to provide adequate nutrients in the diet. The vitamin A dietary reference intake for Americans was last updated in 2001.The goal of this symposium is to discuss the opportunities to refine the 2001 vitamin A dietary reference intakes for pregnancy and early life and to discuss some of the many recent advances in what we have learned about vitamin A, pro-vitamin A carotenoids, non-provitamin A carotenoids, and carotenoid metabolites in pregnancy and early-life nutrition.
