Clinical and Translational Nutrition
This 90-minute session will provide an overview of two activities related to assessing nutrient requirements undertaken by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board over the past year. First, an overview of the process to update the DRIs for sodium and potassium for the healthy population will illustrate the application of systematic reviews and other new tools and resources, including consideration of chronic disease endpoints, to setting DRI values for these nutrients. The second presentation will highlight a workshop that explored current knowledge about special nutritional requirements in disease states and medical conditions that cannot be met with a normal diet. Included will be an examination of the role of genetic variation in nutrient requirements for acute and chronic medical conditions as well as emerging data implicating a contribution of nutritional status to disease outcomes. Examples will be presented to illustrate the complexities in determining potential nutritional requirements for the management of specific disease states and medical conditions.
