Most US-trained radiation oncologists feel very comfortable treating patients with prostate cancer, but when facing non-prostate GU malignancies, lack of experience in residency training translates into inherent hesitation to evaluate and consider radiation therapy management for patients with renal, upper urinary track, bladder and penile cancers. Radiation therapy is a very effective modality and could help many patients avoid catastrophic surgical outcomes and achieve better clinical outcomes, if properly integrated into the management of patients with these malignancies.
Proposed speakers - Drs. Juanita Crook, Ananya Choudhury, Shankar Siva and Felix Feng - are internationally renowned radiation oncologists with expertise and experience in managing these non-prostate GU malignancies. A short "how to" session will equip practicing radiation oncologists with knowledge of proper patient selection, workup, and radiation therapy management. The goal is to identify scenarios when patients should be referred to centers with expertise, but to also highlight when a careful, but inherently straight-forward approach with available radiation technologies can be done in local cancer centers and hospitals.
By empowering practicing radiation oncologists to speak up at local tumor boards when these patients are presented, we will eventually educate urologists and medical oncologists on the growing role of radiation therapy and will help establish RT as a viable, safe and effective treatment option for patients with these GU malignancies.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe to referring physicians and patients the evidence-based role of radiation therapy in management of non-prostate GU malignancies (renal, upper urinary track, bladder and penile cancers).
- Determine which patients can be safely and effectively treated with radiation therapy, and how to integrate radiation therapy into multi-disciplinary management of these patients.
- Assess personal level of comfort and readiness to evaluate and treat patients with non-prostate GU malignancies.
