Dr. Francis J. McGovern is a board certified urologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston MA. His practice specializes in the surgical treatment of urologic cancers including prostate, kidney, bladder, ureteral and testicular cancers. He is well versed in complex reconstuctive surgeries of the urinary tract and works in conjuntion with the gyn oncology service, trauma service and surgical oncology service in complex cases involving the urinary tract requiring multiple surgeons.
Dr McGovern is the Director of Urologic Trauma at the MGH and is a part of the tumor thrombus team which specializes in renal cell carcinoma invading the vena cava.
In the course of his 35 + years at MGH he has made significant contributions in the area of Radio-frequency ablation of kidney tumors and needle biopsy of renal masses. He helped develop the clinical pathways to streamline the pre-operative , intra-operative and post-operative care of urologic surgical patients.
In recent years his interest in combatting the opioid crisis has led to the development of ,and implimentation of, long acting local blocks to facilitate early recovery after surgery and significant reduction in opiod use.
