Stephen W. Leslie, MD is an Associate Professor of Surgery, Department of Urology at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. He is the Editor in Chief of "Urology Board Review" for McGraw-Hill and the online review site "StatPearls.com". His research has mainly been directed at kidney stone disease in which he holds 5 patents for various stone retrieval devices including the "Escape" and "Parachute" kidney stone baskets which are based on his patents. He helped design the Lithogold Lithotripsy Machine (ESWL) that is highly regarded by independent experts.
Dr. Leslie has been doing clinical research in kidney stone disease and prevention for almost 30 years. He is the Medical Director and Founder of the Comprehensive Kidney Stone Prevention and Treatment Center at Creighton. He regularly gives highly rated teaching lectures to medical students, residents and practicing physicians on kidney stone disease. One of his special interests is in helping physicians understand and initiate stone prevention programs in their own geographical areas to help more of their patients benefit from such services.
Dr. Leslie spent 28 years in private practice before switching to full time academic practice so he could devote more time to teaching. He has been at Creighton University for 7 years during which time the Urology Department grew from just himself to 5 full time academics. He was instrumental in starting a brand new urology residency program at Creighton that is currently in its 3rd year.
Dr. Leslie was the first Editor in Chief of Emedicine Urology and has won numerous awards for his clinical and teaching excellence including the "Thirlby" award from the AUA North Central Section. He is the author of the award-winning patient education book called "The Kidney Stones Handbook" and numerous other patient education materials, newspaper articles and television appearances.
