Stephen Mark Biography:
Born in Dunedin New Zealand, son of Sir Alan and Lady Patricia Mark, studied medicine at Otago University
I undertook fellowship training at Duke University ( Prof George Webster ) in reconstructice urology and Bristol ( Prof David Frank ) in paediatric urology. This gave our family an experience of travel and work in the UK and USA.
Married Jules from Nelson in 1987, and have 3 children, Alex, Sam and Maddie. Jules has recently completed her Masters at Otago University in Entrepreneurship.
We settled in Christchurch with a consultant position at Christchurch hospital and private urology at Urology Associates in 1994. My clinical interests remain in paediatric and reconstructive urology.
I have published a number of papers, in addition to several book chapters including the reconstructive and paediatric section of the Oxford Pocket text of Urology.
My role as a RACS examiner began in 2001 and I progressed to Senior examiner in Urology for 2 years. I was head of department at Christchurch hospital for over 10 years and along with Peter Davidson created and implemented an innovative successful budget holding department model, providing efficient and effectice urological care.
Following the Christchurch earthquakes, I was awarded the USANZ sponsored Christchurch medal for bravery in addition to a Christchurch City Council medal.
I have been the chair of the NZ Section of Urology for the last 3 years and have chaired the NZ Ministry of Health Prostate cancer taskforce throughout this time. In these roles we have progressed national standardisation of referral to secondary care urology and the Movember funded NZ prostate cancer registry. I was voted in as Vice President of USANZ 2017.
