Cardiovascular Surgeon and Division Head, Cardiovascular Surgery
Vancouver General Hospital
University of British Columbia
Dr. Peter Skarsgard is a Cardiovascular Surgeon and Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of British Columbia, and Head of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at Vancouver General Hospital. His area of expertise is mitral valve repair and complex valvular surgery. He has a deep commitment to surgical education, based upon a reverence for those who trained him.
In 2016, Dr. Skarsgard founded Vesalius Cardiovascular Inc., a research and development venture, to exploit his discovery of a simple and safe technique to repair degenerative mitral regurgitation with a percutaneously delivered implantable medical device, avoiding the need for open heart surgery. The project aims to address the burden of untreated DMR in comorbid patients, a major unmet clinical need. Vesalius now supports 7 full-time employees, 6 of whom are biomedical engineers. As President and CSO, Dr. Skarsgard leads the initiative, while continuing to provide clinical service.
Dr. Skarsgard is a UBC and Harvard alumnus (Undergraduate Biochemistry, Medical School, General Surgery, and Cardiothoracic Surgery).
