St. Paul's Hospital; Providence Health Care
Belinda-Ann Furlan is a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the Atrial Fibrillation Clinic at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, BC. She graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2006. She was one of the first NPs to pioneer the role in British Columbia after the 2005 legislation. Belinda's NP roles at St.Paul's Hospital since graduation include cardiac surgery, in-patient cardiology and the heart failure clnic. Belinda considers her NP career a second vocation; her first is that of wife to her husband Ed and mother to her three children.
Belinda co-authored BCNPA's document "Specialized Services: Nurse Practitioners Collaborating to Improve the Continuum of Care," December 2017. In it she said the following:
“I enjoy empowering patients by improving their understanding of Atrial Fibrillation including all of their specific related co morbidities and how each disease or condition affects each other, linking the patient as a whole person... When a patient and their family understands their health diagnosis, implications of their conditions to them as a unique individual, the role of pharmacology/non pharmacology treatment and lifestyle [modification]... they are empowered and motivated to create change and work collaboratively with their family and their health care team. This results in better health, wellbeing and quality of life for each patient, as well as a reduction of health care dollars spent."
