The timing of cardiac surgery for for critically ill patient in the coronary intensive care unit is is often subject to clinical debate and disagreement in everyday clinical practice. In the absence of high quality randomized controlled trials, clinicians often relay on their own clinical experience, intuition, or observation studies with important methodological limitations.
This workshop will gather national academic thought and clinical care leaders to discuss three clinically important, topical and yet controversial issues in the management of critically ill patients admitted to the CICU in an interactive mini debate format:
1. The optimal timing of cardiac surgery in patients with infective endocarditis complicated by stroke
2. The optimal timing of cardiac surgery for patient with a mechanical complication from STEMI who are not hemodynamically unstable
3. Pre-CABG dual anti-platelet management
4. The role of cultprit only PCI vs multivessel CABG in patients with cardiogenic shock with multivessel disease
5. The effectiveness of current CCS cardiac surgery wait-list guidelines
The proposed workshop will take the form of a case presentation followed by 5 mini-debates. Each debate will have a "PRO" and a "CON" speaker, with each presenter given a maximum of 3.5 minutes to speak. Each debate will be followed by a 2 min question period and the audience will be able to vote on a “winner” using the Interactive Audience Participation System, to be followed by a longer question and answer period to end the session.
