Pre-Session Welcome with Media Campaign: Attendees will be presented with an audiovisual based collection (e.g. posters and/or slide deck) of profiles featuring women in cardiovascular medicine and science. The purpose of this campaign is to increase awareness of the accomplishments and successes of Canadian women.
Introductory Presentation (Co-chairs and Michelle Graham)
A brief introduction will highlight findings from the CCC 2018 gender equity questionnaire and our gender-based analysis of our literature review and environmental scan. An interactive poll using the Audience Response System (ARS) will be administered to understand the “opening” perceptions on issues relevant to gender equity in cardiovascular medicine and science. (15-20 minutes)
Interactive Panel-Based Discussion:
This panel discussion will be an interactive question and answer session with audience-led questions to explore key themes relevant to advancing women (and diversity) in cardiovascular medicine and science. We have also identified major themes/questions to further facilitate discussion (30 minutes):
1. Women in leadership (e.g. Is there value added of women in leadership positions?)
2. Family planning/work-life balance (e.g. What strategies do you recommend to help with work-life balance?)
3. Gender and equity challenges (e.g. Does gender/diversity impact career opportunities? If so, how can one overcome these barriers?)
4. Institutional policies/gender pay gaps (e.g. What changes would you like to see happen at your workplace to promote a positive environment for female workers?)
5. Women in science and technology (e.g. What are effective ways to overcome gender/diversity barriers to career opportunities?)
6. Mentorship and networking (e.g. How can one transfer what is learned from a mentorship relationship into an actionable career plan?)
7. Gender equity advocacy (e.g. How can we engage and support colleagues as we strive to promote gender equity?)
Our multi-disciplinary panel will feature (to be confirmed):
1) KT and Mentorship Expert: Dr. Sharon Straus
2) Women in Medicine Advocates: Drs. Roxana Mehran (Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai, New York) and Dr. Gigi Osler (CMA President)
3) Cardiologists and Male Colleagues in Gender Equity: Drs. Kim Connelly and Lyall Higginson
4) Cardiac Surgeon: Dr. Maral Ouzanian
5) Scientific Community (CIHR): CIHR Institute of Gender and Health Scientific Director (Dr. Cara Tannenbaum) or ICRH Scientific Director (Dr. Brian Rowe)
Closing Remarks (Michelle Graham, Co-Chairs)
An interactive poll using the ARS will be administered to understand gender equity perceptions. We will highlight future knowledge translational activities to be explored by the CCS Women’s Executive Working Group. (10 minutes)
