Critical care cardiology is a new subspecialty with a growing interest amongst current trainees and with several different training routes. In response to a progressive trend in Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) acuity, cardiology leaders have identified the need for specialized CICUs to care for such patients. Consensus statements from national professional societies have proposed advanced staffing and education transformation for the modern CICU. Critical Care Medicine (CCM) training for cardiology graduates can provide the skills to centralize the care of patients with a primary cardiovascular diagnosis during the most acute phases of their illness. In this workshop designed for current cardiovascular trainees, as well as cardiology leaders and mentors, we will discuss the existing training and professional development pathways for cardiology trainees interested in CCM. This session is based on our recently accepted manuscript “Critical Care Cardiology: A Fellow’s Guide to Training Pathways” which will be published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology Trainee Section in June 2019. The session will be divided into the following 7-10 minute talks, with ample time for audience questions. - Introduction with interactive case presentation - Why choose CCM after Cardiology? - Training Pathways: Two-year Canadian Training vs Two-year US Training - Training Pathways: One-year Training - Professional opportunities (community versus academic; research; leadership) - Women in Critical Care Cardiology
