The Canadian Society of Echocardiography (CSE) is offering a Spotlight Session focusing on the tricuspid valve. Long ignored, there is now growing interest in the tricuspid valve. Overwhelming evidence is accumulating showing dismal clinical outcomes in patients with functional tricuspid regurgitation. Coupled with limited indications and options for treatment, this has spurred the development of newer therapeutic options for addressing tricuspid regurgitation with the hope of improving outcomes. These advances has also led to a renewed interest in tricuspid valve imaging, both to understand the pathologies and mechanisms of tricuspid regurgitation, but also to plan and guide therapeutic interventions. Echocardiography has been in the forefront of imaging the tricuspid valve and is the current gold standard for assessing tricuspid regurgitation severity. With advancing techniques, echocardiography has also become the mainstay for guiding newer transcatheter techniques to reduce tricuspid regurgitation severity. This Spotlight Session will cover all aspects of tricuspid valve imaging by echocardiography and interventions, spanning surgical to newer transcatheter techniques. The target audience will be echocardiographers, structural heart specialists (interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons), community cardiologists caring for and referring patients with tricuspid regurgitation and cardiology/cardiac surgical trainees. This Spotlight will address the audience’s educational needs by providing them with a clinical approach that is consistent with the most up-to-date evidence and recommendations, using illustrative cases. Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

• better understand tricuspid valve anatomy and suitability for tricuspid valve interventions;
• accurately assess the mechanisms of tricuspid regurgitation and quantify the severity of tricuspid regurgitation; and
• better understand the different therapies to address severe tricuspid regurgitation, the indications, strengths and weaknesses, including surgical and transcatheter techniques.
