Schedule:
Session 8:30 – 10am (1.5 hrs)
Break 10 – 10:15 (coffee/tea provided)
Session 10:15 – 12:00 (1.75 hrs)
Buffet Lunch 12:00 – 12:45 (buffet located in lobby; dining in Andreas Room)
Session 12:45 – 3:30pm (2.75 hrs)

Join us for a hands-on workshop that includes both lecture and laboratory elements. This workshop is for people who have had no or very limited experience with using a microscope and interpreting the observations of a microscopic examination of activated sludge.
The following topics will be covered:
• sludge solids separation problems
• activated sludge as a microbial enrichment culture
• the phase contrast microscope
• sample preparation and staining methods
• microscopic observation of activated sludge communities
• use of microscopic observation in diagnosis/solution of operating problems
• discussion of results of observations of participant samples

Learner Outcomes:

• Use microscopic observation in diagnosis/solution of operating problems.
• Perform sample preparation and staining methods.
• Observe activated sludge communities through a microscope.

Level: Introduction to; limited knowledge of subject matter / entry level staff
