Socio-Biology of Teams:

We live in a world of ever-increasing complexity. Information available to us expands exponentially every year. The work experience is often fraught, as we all strive to keep track of people, our place in the social order and the pace at which multiple initiatives advance.

Working in the waste water industry is a team sport. Understanding the cognitive science behind social bonding and the natural limits of the human brain can significantly optimize our abilities to work with others effectively and optimize our productivity.

In this workshop segment, we take a step back to understand how life was 20,000 years ago as our predecessors went about their day-to-day activities. This is more than an academic exercise but a critical step in understanding how our modern-day brain functions. In reality, our brain today is not significantly different from that of our Mesolithic ancestors.

With insights into how our brain works and awareness of our innate limits, we will enable a greater understanding of how we can manage our present group environment. We will understand when we can expect to feel in control and what to do when we find ourselves beyond our threshold.

Learner Outcomes:

• Examine the fight, freeze or flight response as well as the challenge of working with foresight and a long-term time horizon and how they play out in the modern world and especially at work.
• Analyze the nature of human bonding and why we need more social “connecting” time than we may think.
• Develop a series of actionable ideas to ensure optimal effectiveness in our personal and professional environments.
