Optimization of primary sedimentation basins has become a key element for improving performance, increasing capacity, and reducing O&M costs in the activated sludge process. This session will provide participants with a framework for analyzing primary sedimentation through a combination of influent solids characterization and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling.

Learner Outcomes:

• Identify key characteristics of influent solids that influence primary sedimentation solids capture.
• Have a working knowledge of at least two laboratory tests that can be performed to determine primary influent solids characteristics.
• Speak to how testing may be used to inform predictive models, such as Computational Fluid Dynamics modeling.
