The EchoWater Project: Implementing a Monumental Nutrient Removal Program to Protect the Sacramento River

SRCSD is undertaking a monumental $2 billion effort – called EchoWater – to take its wastewater treatment to a whole new level. This new system will produce cleaner water, including a 95% reduction in ammonia, for discharge to the Sacramento River, as well as for potential reuse as recycled water.

Learner Outcomes:

• Understand the advanced and multi-faceted pilot testing effort that led to development of design criteria and plan for the EchoWater Project.
• Understand how planning and pilot testing efforts were refined to develop an effective and efficient design of the biological nutrient removal process that is the heart of the EchoWater Project.
• Understand how a wide range of alternatives were analyzed to identify the BNR, tertiary filtration, and disinfection facilities that make up the EchoWater Project.
