If It Stinks, It Corrodes: Basics of Sewer Line Odor and Corrosion

This presentation provides basic technical information on the microbiological and chemical factors that drive the development of odor and corrosion in sewer lines. It teaches the relationship between formation of acidic odor-causing contaminants and gas-phase corrosion on collection system equipment. Pros and cons of current chemical treatment methods are addressed.

Learner Outcomes:

• How a sewage line goes from anaerobic to aerobic when either chemical or chemical free alternatives are used
• How on site generation and feed of dissolved oxygen is used to help a force main stay aerobic
• Uderstand how hydrogen sulfide is formed in a sewage line.
