Emergency and Critical Care
90th FVMA Annual Conference
Every clinician has a unique set of skills and expertise, and it is helpful for general practitioners and referral hospitals to approach each case collaboratively with the patient’s whole medical team. The importance of a GP’s history with a pet and client should not be undervalued, as this offers a unique perspective on this individual patient. The referral team can integrate this familiarity with the patient’s journey with their own experience with complex illnesses, striving for better patient outcomes. A fly on the wall in a referral hospital may hear some common themes: well-intentioned treatment choices that may have missed the mark for a particular patient. This lecture strives to uncover the root of some of these common themes, such as overly enthusiastic fluid therapy, type and dosing of glucocorticoids, antibiotic usage, and wound management and drain placement.
