Surgical site infections are inevitable in any practice routinely offering surgery. Unfortunately, these infections are becoming more problematic due to the development of antibiotic resistance, as well as an increasing array of surgical options in companion animals. In this talk, key concepts on preventing, recognizing and managing surgical site infection will be reviewed. Topics covered will include an update on common emerging pathogens, best practice guidelines and responsible antibiotic usage.
