Position:
Dr. Ferral is a Senior Clinician Educator at the NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, IL.
Training:
Dr. Ferral received his M.D. degree at the Universidad Anahuac in Mexico City in 1985. He completed two years of training in Internal Medicine and four years training in Diagnostic Imaging at the Instituto Nacional de la Nutricion in Mexico City. He completed a two-year fellowship in Interventional Radiology at the University of Minnesota from 1991 to 1993.
Clinical Interest:
Dr. Ferral performs general interventional radiology, including vascular and non-vascular procedures. He has done extensive research in Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt procedures (TIPS), management of portal hypertension and venous disorders. He has also been active in testing and developing endovascular stents. One of his main interests and areas of expertise has been the management of venous diseases.
Awards and Academic achievements:
Dr. Ferral received the Bronze Medal from the American Roentgen Ray Society in San Francisco, California for his work “Doppler Sonography of Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunts.” In April, 1993, he was given the Roscoe E. Miller Award for the original scientific paper, “Duplex and Color Sonography in the Follow-up Evaluation of TIPS”. The 1999 Pfizer Award for Excellence in Research, Education and Patient Care, was awarded to Dr. Ferral at LSU Medical Center. He was given the Teacher of the Year Award by the radiology residents at Rush University Medical Center in 2005.
Dr. Ferral has published 106 articles in peer-reviewed journals, has edited and co-edited five textbooks in interventional radiology and is a reviewer for AJR and Seminars in Interventional Radiology.
Personal:
Dr Ferral is originally from Mexico and is fluent in English, Spanish and Italian. His hobbies are his book and art collection, music, and glass blowing. He lectures mainly in the United States, Europe and South America.
