Many assume that extreme levels of insulation and air sealing are the only way to drastically reduce energy use and carbon emissions in existing homes, However, equal, or better results have been achieved through the combination of weatherization, climate appropriate heat pumps, and photovoltaics. It is clear that electrification can work to move existing homes to deep reductions of energy use and/or net zero energy. But, can this strategy be scaled to millions of homes? Results and costs from both individual homes and programs will be shared. Explore strategies to address risks such as a severe prolonged cold spell overpowering the electrical grid, poorly installed heat pumps, or HP installations in homes with substandard enclosures. If there is buy-in to electrification as a near-term goal, how do we provide for a smoother transition? What should programs and policies address if we are to be successful in an electrification future?
