Cesar A. Arias, MD. MSc, PhD. is Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHealth), Houston. He holds the Margaret and Herbert Dupont Chair in Infectious Diseases and the Laurel and Robert H. Graham Faculty Fellowship at UTHealth. He is the founder director of the Center for Antimicrobial Resistance and Microbial Genomics (CARMiG) at McGovern Medical School and the Center for Infectious Diseases at the UTHealth School of Public Health. Dr. Arias obtained his MD from Universidad El Bosque, Bogota, Colombia, MSc in Clinical Microbiology from University of London and a PhD in Molecular Microbiology from University of Cambridge, UK. As a Wellcome Trust International Fellow, he founded (and still directs) the Molecular Genetics and Antimicrobial Resistance Unit and International Center for Microbial Genomics at Universidad El Bosque, Bogota. In 2002, he moved to Houston for Internal Medicine and ID training at UTHealth McGovern Medical School and UT MD Anderson Cancer Center. He joined the UTHealth faculty as assistant professor in 2008 and became professor in 2016. Dr. Arias is a nationally and internationally recognized expert conducting basic, translational and clinical research on antibiotic resistance. He was one of the first recipients of the NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award and received the ASM Young Investigator Award and the IDSA Oswald Avery Award for early achievement. He was inducted to the American Society of Clinical Investigation in 2015 and the American Academy of Microbiology in 2019 and serves as editor of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy and IDSA Chair of IDWeek 2019.
