State the overall Goal or Outcome : By the end of the workshop, the learner should be able to list various difficult debriefing situations (i.e. phenotypes), and describe several advanced conversational tools that can be used to manage these situations.
Intended Audience : Simulation educators, administrators and clinicians looking to advanced their communication skills. Targeted at an audience with some prior experience facilitating debriefing sessions (either simulation-based or clinical debriefings).
Relevance to the Conference : This workshop highlights conversational strategies that can be used during difficult conversations. While debriefing serves as the context for this workshop, the strategies outlined are applicable across all contexts - in clinical conversations, during boardroom meetings, committee meetings, personal conversations etc. The vignettes used in the workshop are common, yet challenging situations, that most people have already encountered in their lives. The tools are offered in the context of existing debriefing frameworks - in a sense, we are adding an extra layer of skills to support debriefers through challenging conversations. The broad applicability and generalizability of the content shared in this workshop will lend to its broad appeal.
