Strategies for Library Mergers and Centralizing Library Services

:This session will provide success stories and lessons learned from librarians who have gone through library centralization or library integration following hospital mergers. Presentations will cover needs assessment/SWOT analysis, licensing, budgeting, technical challenges, staff, solo perspective, and other considerations.

1) Discuss the benefits of a needs assessment/SWOT analysis when merging
2) List some of the considerations involved in unifying services
3) Study the licensing and budgeting issues faced by merging
4) Recognize technical issues involved in a merger
5) Describe staffing challenges
6) Discuss challenges faced by solos

Linda Matula Schwartz, MDE, AHIP, CM, Director of Library Services and Patient Education, is responsible for institution wide direction of Library Services; Patient, Family and Consumer Education; and the LVHN Scholarly Works Repository including all administrative and supervisory duties. Her role includes providing comprehensive information services, digital and print resources, and support services to meet the patient care, education and research needs of administration, clinical staff, affiliated students and employees. Her role also includes overseeing digital and print patient education information and creation of custom materials.  

Linda holds a Master of Distance Education from Athabasca University. Her Bachelor of Arts is from Thomas Edison State College with postgraduate studies in the natural sciences. Linda is a member of The Academy of Health Information Professionals for health sciences librarianship and certified in copyright management through the Special Libraries Association. She completed a National Library of Medicine Fellowship in Biomedical Informatics.

Linda has authored articles published in a variety of periodicals, including Journal of General Internal Medicine, American Family Physician, Journal of Hospital Librarianship, Medical Reference Services Quarterly, International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning, and Patient Education Management. She has presented papers and posters to the Medical Library Association, MLA TriChapter Conference, and the Pennsylvania Library Association Lehigh Valley Chapter.

Michelle Kraft, MLS, AHIP is the Director of Library Services at the Cleveland Clinic Health System which includes the Cleveland Clinic main campus, 8 community hospitals and a hospital in Abu Dhabi. As Director, Michelle works toward providing services and resources to the entire Cleveland Clinic Health System. Due to the divers nature of the hospitals within the system, providing resources and services can be a challenge, she is always working towards the goal of providing the same quality resources services across the health system’s libraries to support patient care, research and education.
Michelle has served as Board Member of the Medical Library Association and later she served as President of the association. She is very active in technology and education. She has authored several articles on the use of technology in the library and the use of social media in librarianship. She is the author of the Krafty Librarian, a blog focused on the interests of medical librarianship and can be found discussing librarianship and Cleveland Browns football on Twitter as @Krafty.

As a solo hospital librarian for 23 years she understands the challenges faced by hospital librarians as they deal with constant change. Angie is currently president of the Ohio Health Sciences Library Association, chair of the Professional Development committee for the Midwest Chapter of MLA, and has been an active member of the MLA Education Annual Planning Committee. She currently holds advanced specializations in both Consumer Health and Disaster Information Services. Angie is especially interested in issues relating to professional development and adult learning.
