Janice M. Phillips, Ph.D.

Janice Phillips, RN, CENP, PhD, FAAN, is an associate professor at Rush University College of Nursing and the director of nursing research and health equity at Rush University Medical Center. She is also a Public Voices Fellow with the OpEd Project. Dr. Janice Phillips is an experienced clinician, researcher, educator, and public policy advocate in the health care arena who completed service as a 2010-2011 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow, working in the office of Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV (D-WV). In this capacity, she worked on broad aspects of the Affordable Care Act and prescription drug abuse. With specialties spanning oncology, public health, women’s health, minority health, academic nursing, nursing regulation, and research administration, she has served as a program director at the National Institute of Nursing Research (NIH), Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs at CGFNS International, and a governor appointed member of the Illinois State Board of Nursing. Dr. Phillips is the recipient of numerous recognitions such as the Nursing Spectrum’s Advancing and Leading the Profession Award, four distinguished alumni awards, and the MLK Jr. Humanitarian Award. She was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in 2000 and is the author of over 80 publications, 4 edited text books, and a health policy column. She has published OpEds in Scientific American, the Hill and the Morning Consult. Janice has dedicated her career to ensuring that those most in need have access to affordable and equitable health care. In her current role at Rush University Medical Center she is leading efforts to educate nurses throughout the Rush Health System on the social determinants of health and works with a diverse team of experts in advancing the organization’s overall strategic plan to achieve health equity.
