Debra R. Berlanstein, AHIP
Debra Berlanstein attended Vassar College, received a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and English from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and a Masters of Library Science from the Palmer Graduate Library School of Long Island University. She is the Associate Director of the Hirsh Health Sciences Library, Tufts University, Boston. Most recently she served as the Head of Reference and Research Services at the Health Sciences & Human Services Library at the University of Maryland in Baltimore and Head of Information Services at the Hirsh Health Sciences Library. Previously she was a Reference Librarian and Head of Reference at Towson University, Towson, Maryland, where she was the Liaison to the Nursing, Health Sciences and Psychology departments.
Debra’s main areas of interest include teaching principles of evidence based medicine and public health, and understanding the many scholarly communication and publication issues facing libraries today. Debra was selected as an NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellow in the 2013-2014 class. She is an active member of the Medical Library Association, where she is currently the Co-Chair of the National Program Committee for MLA '18 in Atlanta. She was previously the Chair of the Public Health and Health Administration Section as well as a member Section Council and on several juries. She was Chair of the North Atlantic Health Science Libraries Chapter (NAHSL) of the Medical Library Association in 2016-2017. She was previously an active member of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter (MAC), where she served on several committees and as a mentor to first time MAC conference attendees. She also completed the Library Leadership in a Digital Age program sponsored by the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Debra enjoys walking for fitness, theater, movies, dining out, watching any British mystery series, and, true to her New Jersey roots, is an avid Springsteen fan who has attended over 50 live performances.
