Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that can have very serious complications if untreated, but syphilis rates are rising rapidly nationwide even as it is preventable and curable. LHDs are critical to addressing this urgent crisis. It is essential that innovative strategies, including interventions in pregnancy such as case management and public awareness campaigns, be considered and incorporated into local efforts to increase testing and treatment and address all syphilis cases, especially congenital syphilis.
