Does the current political climate affect funding for your local health department or the health of your community? Policymakers rely on trusted messengers such as local health officials to gauge the health and needs of the communities they serve. Local health department leaders and staff are not powerless to convey the needs of their health department or community. This session will help attendees learn to successfully engage with, and educate, policymakers about the value of their health department to keep the public safe and healthy. In addition, attendees will learn how to build strong relationships at the federal level that will impact the overall health of their community. Speakers include 2018 Advocate of the Year award winner and Director of Public Health Protection for Oklahoma City-County Health Department, Phil Maytubby, and a Congressional staff person based in Orlando.
