Developing Productive Relationships with Faculty for Successful Education Abroad

The successful development and maintenance of education abroad programming on any campus requires a partnership between education abroad staff and faculty. However, many faculty and education abroad professionals struggle to develop productive relationships that support education abroad programming (often working almost exclusively in their respective silos). This session explores the myriad of roles faculty members perform, their perspectives of the education abroad office/staff, and the challenges faculty and education abroad professionals face in developing health relationships to support education abroad. Presenters will discuss their experiences as both faculty and education abroad professionals/administrators and offer examples of successful strategies for developing relationships that promote education abroad.

Christopher Newport University

Todd Lee Goen is Instructor of Communication at Christopher Newport University, where he is the Faculty Director of a short-term program to Luxembourg; chairs the institution’s International Studies Advisory Committee, overseeing international programming on campus; and serves as academic advisor to incoming international students. Goen previously held academic appointments at Clemson and IPFW. He is an Honors College Graduate with a BA in Computer Science, French, and Vocational Ministry from Harding University, holds an MA in Communication from the University of Arkansas, and complete doctoral coursework in communication at the University of Georgia.

Meg Ramey, PhD

Meg Ramey (Ph.D., University of St. Andrews) is the Director of Education Abroad for Tutku Educational Travel-www.tutkueducationaltravel.com-where she enjoys working with professors and EA staff in the development of travel study programs across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Europe. Formerly, she was an associate professor at Messiah College for 8 years where she led students on cross-cultural and service-learning programs spanning 4 continents and 18 countries. In her free time, she serves on the board of YesLiberia, a non-profit that seeks to empower young people in Liberia through meaningful service-learning opportunities in education, healthcare, and technology.
