Developing Immigration Policies for International Faculty & Staff

This part-day workshop will focus on the thought-process and best practices behind establishing immigration policies for international faculty and staff. Specifically, this workshop will focus on conducting internal immigration audits, I-9 compliance, H-1B and J-1 departmental workflows, and PERM recruitment/audit best practices. For these topics, this presentation will also establish best practice reporting methods, actionable items to correct discrepancies, document retention policies, and audit/control considerations within a university setting.

Basim joined Maggio + Kattar in 2017 as an Associate, where he works with a variety of non-profit and higher education clients. Prior to becoming an attorney, Basim provided immigration services, including case management and compliance auditing, for international faculty, staff, and students at one of the largest public universities in the U.S. During law school, Basim interned at the DOJ EOIR Detroit Immigration Court, as well as at USCIS's Office of the Chief Counsel.

Christopher Montanez is the Visa & Immigration Specialist with Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he serves as the primary contact for all matters surrounding employment visas (H-1B, O-1) and petitions for Permanent Residency. Since 2017 Christopher has analyzed the federal regulations, drafted university policies in response, developed new procedures for implantation, and created internal controls to ensure compliance. Christopher bring a firsthand prospective on the internal thought process of how a university moves to develop changes in immigration policy.
