International Education Advocacy at Home and in DC

Friday, November 15
10:00 AM - 11:15 AM
Location: Constellation C

How can you make your voice heard where ever you need to advocate? Panelists will break down the simple steps everyone can take to be an advocate, share their experiences attending NAFSA’s Advocacy Day, and offer tips on how to develop meaningful relationships with your members of Congress year-round. The panel will also share the latest information on legislation moving on Capitol Hill and NAFSA efforts to create a more welcoming and globally engaged United States. Put this knowledge to use in preparing for NAFSA Advocacy Day 2020 and developing your own advocacy action plan

Learning Objectives:

Jesse L. Phillips, M.A.s SAHE; DIPL

Assistant Director
Gettysburg College

Jesse L. Phillips is currently the Assistant Director of the Center for Global Education at Gettysburg College. He has been working in international education since 2012 when he worked as an International Student Adviser at Indiana University of Pennsylvania while completing his M.A. in Student Affairs in Higher Education. He joined the field because he shares Senator Fulbright’s belief that intercultural exchange is an important “avenue of hope” towards world peace. He also holds a M.A. in Diplomacy and International Relations from Seton Hall University, where he focused on international law and European integration. During this time he worked for the Darfur Victim’s Project, and the Friends of the Free University Berlin in the New York City DAAD office. He studied abroad four times, taught English abroad, and interned for the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Germany. Jesse managed the international exchange students and semester abroad opportunities at Robert Morris University along with immigration issues for degree-seeking international students. Jesse is very involved in the field, serving as the inaugural Advocacy Representative for NAFSA Region VIII, and is currently a member of PACIE's board of trustees. Jesse’s two passions in the field are career integration and international education advocacy. If he’s not at work, he’s (hopefully) outside enjoying that natural beauty of the Appalachians.
