Oregon Health and Science University’s Transgender Health Program (OHSU THP) is recognized throughout the region as a pioneer in patient centered transgender healthcare delivery as well as a driver of positive institutional change for trans and gender non-conforming patients, employees, and students. It has also been a contributing factor in the recruitment of diverse health professions students interested in learning about transgender health. The THP works to provide safe and affirming healthcare to trans and gender nonconforming patients through education, research, advocacy, and quality improvement projects, and was instrumental in the Oregon Health Plan expansion that now covers a majority of transgender health services and procedures. Their presence at the university provides a wealth of learning opportunities for future health profession students. Students interested in transgender health have partnered with the OHSU THP to better educational offerings and improve institutional inclusivity. These efforts have been met with varying levels of success and provide valuable lessons for how OHSU, and other large academic institutions, can better engage students as partners to help improve patient outcomes, and provide more support to a student body that is inclusive of gender minority students.
Highlighted in this poster will be the following initiatives:
• A successful partnership that resulted in the inclusion of pronouns on all institutional identification badges at OHSU.
• A School of Nursing workshop on prescription of gender affirming hormones
• A student initiated project to partner with the OHSU Simulation Center and THP to offer simulated clinical experiences and assessments for medical students utilizing trans identified community members as standardized patients
• Student led curriculum improvements in a Sexual Health History Clinical Skills Lab and small group sessions for medical students
• A student research project to perform a needs assessment regarding transgender care in the Emergency Department
