10 - Nursing Care of Transgender Patients Pursuing Vaginoplasty: From Pre-op to Long Term Follow Up

Nurses from two separate practices will give an overview of supporting patients throughout the surgical process as they go through vaginoplasty surgery. Course will have a nursing specific focus from the perspective of working as a part of a multi-disciplinary team. Course takes participants through pre-operative assessments, education and preparation for surgery, defines vaginoplasty and surgical options within vaginoplasty including detailed overview of the surgeries themselves, hospital overview, and what to expect for post op recovery. Although this is specifically given from a nursing perspective, it is applicable accross disciplines to provide health care providers, mental health providers, social workers, doctors, knowlege and resources to better understand what patients need as they go through vaginoplasty.

 

Learning Objectives:

• Evaluate patients for surgical readiness incorporating psychosocial needs, hair removal/medical clearance, and emotional preparedness
• Troubleshoot dilation teaching and help talk patients through challenges with dilation
• Create a nursing care plan for aftercare in the 3 month post operative period following vaginoplasty
