Last year NPR published a series of articles highlighting severe challenges sexual assault victims with I/DD are facing, especially due to broken systems that aren’t equipped to serve them. This, along with greater attention from the media about stories involving victims with I/DD, has led to more states taking decisive action to address these challenges. This session reveals recent strategies and solutions implemented by three of The Arc’s state chapters, and relevant projects from The Arc’s National Center on Criminal Justice and Disability. Come learn more about what you, or your chapter, can do to address the hidden epidemic of sexual assault in your state and local community.

Learning Objectives:

• Upon completion, participants will be able to know how to use current research/data related to sexual assault of people with I/DD in the effort to address this often hidden epidemic, and prevent it in their own state or community.
• Upon completion, participants will also be able to name four key state or local macro-level efforts conducted by chapters of The Arc (or the national office) to address the epidemic of sexual assault through programmatic and policy change.
• Upon completion, participants will be able to identify strategies that enable advocates to serve the most marginalized victims in society, and strategies that places people with disabilities in the center of the movement to stop sexual assault.
