Pin-Wei Chen is a pre-doctoral fellow aim to graduate with his PhD in Rehabilitation and Participation Science in 2019 December. His overarching goal in his dissertation is to create a virtual coach/passive monitoring system for manual wheelchair users to train and monitor daily wheelchair propulsion patterns and usage. His current work involves using wearable IMUs with machine learning to test the feasibility of detecting real-world wheelchair propulsion patterns and the development of a wheelchair propulsion intervention program for inpatient rehabilitation. The two research aims complement each other since machine learning requires data which can be collected in an intervention program, and the ultimate goal of an intervention program is to enable participants to practice in the real world which can be monitored by the machine learning developed.
