Shirley Ryan AbilityLab / Northwestern
My long-term goal is to develop neural interface technologies and translate them to people with spinal cord injury to help restore some of their lost function. My undergraduate degrees were electrical engineering and biochemistry from Rice University after which I obtained my MD/PhD at Baylor College of Medicine. My PhD was in systems neuroscience with a focus on technologies to acquire data from large populations of neurons in the brain and methods to analyze this. I am now in residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab where I am doing an additional year integrated into residency for research. My research is the development and application of wearable sensors for rehabilitation in spinal cord injury.
