University of Alabama at Birmingham
I am an Associate Professor and Director of Continuing Education and Community Outreach in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). I have over 30 years of clinical experience providing physical therapy service and education to individuals with disabilities, which includes providing PT services in UAB Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Clinic. I have helped developed many of the educational materials used in this clinic including the award –winning http://www.uab.edu/shp/toneyourbones/. Much of my research has centered on the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis that are within the scope of practice of physical therapists. These experiences coupled with other research opportunities, have honed my skills in evaluation methods including quantitative measurement, survey research, nominal interviewing, focus group guidance, and cognitive interviewing. I am highly interested in exploring the place of Yoga as part of physical therapy treatment for individuals with osteoporosis. We recently published a mini review concerning Yoga and its effect on bone and its implication in physical therapy treatment for individuals with low bone density. I believe with further evidence concerning the effects of Yoga on bone could help us explore evidence-based treatment for musculoskeletal issues.
