Learning Health Systems (LHS) are defined as the alignment of science, informatics, and culture for continuous improvement and innovation with best practices embedded in the care process. In 2017, the University of Michigan's Department of PMR initiated a department-wide initiative to implement an LHS (PMR LHS) with the mission to learn from every patient by aligning clinical care, research, informatics and culture, enabling continuous improvement and innovation in the practice of medical rehabilitation. In this symposia, we will address the challenges and opportunities encountered and lessons learned in taking the first-steps in the transformation into an LHS.
