Athlete Development & Sports Rehabilitation
The mTBI literature has focused nearly exclusively on males. Studying female athletes is of great need because there is evidence that female athletes may be more vulnerable to injury, experience greater number of injuries, and take longer to recover from mTBI relative to males. We will present multi-modal neuroimaging and behavioral data from an ongoing prospective study of female athletes examined 3-10 days post-mTBI that controlled for menstrual cycle phase at time of assessment. We demonstrate relationships between hormone levels, brain perfusion, and stress symptoms, as well as, characterize differences in attention for female athletes with mTBI vs. matched controls.
