– United States
I am an Assistant Professor in the Division of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). The goal of my research is to produce evidence that informs the development of preventive interventions that improve the overall health and well-being of older adults. This goal stems from my PhD training in gerontology having taken place in a college of public health. My public health perspective has influenced my research during all stages of my career. My doctoral research focused on identifying potentially modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) among older adults with a genetic predisposition for dementia. My research as a post-doctoral fellow at UTMB advanced my interest in studying high-risk populations by investigating potentially modifiable risk factors for ADRD among older Hispanics. My research evolved after joining the Division of Rehabilitation Sciences in February 2016 to include a focus on quality and outcomes of post-acute care. I am especially interested in older adults with cognitive impairment who are receiving post-acute care in nursing home settings. My current research also investigates how physical frailty contributes to the progression of cognitive decline in diverse populations.
