Through my professional career, I have worked with patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplants and their experiences with treating and assessing for early signs in debilitation, fatigue, and other factors that have lead to their deconditioning. Since 2004, I have been working as a nurse practitioner with both inpatient and outpatient services with a multidisciplinary team working with stem cell transplant patients. I have been involved in multiple quality improvement projects, participated in standard of care protocol revisions, and co-developed a pilot quality improvement program entitled Motivated and Moving. This program was implemented with self-perceived motivation and increase the frequency of participation in physical activities. Findings were published in Cancer Nursing and this program continues in our institution and adopted by other nursing units. Recently, I have been involved with a multidisciplinary team looking at aging population of patients who are to receive an allogeneic stem cell transplant. As a result, we have formed the Enhanced Recovery –Stem Cell Transplant program (ER_SCT) in hope to evaluate patients early and identify risk factors which can lead to physical debilitation and overall poorer outcomes.
