Hannes Devos is an Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He earned Bachelor and Master degrees of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Leuven, Belgium. He received his PhD in Biomedical Science in 2011 from the University of Leuven. After his postdoctoral studies in neurology and mechanical engineering at the University of Iowa, Dr. Devos took up a tenure track position at Augusta University, GA. In 2016, he continued his academic career in a tenure track position at the University of Kansas Medical Center. As Director of the Laboratory for Advanced Rehabilitation Research in Simulation (LARRS), he oversees all research that fulfils the mission of the lab to improve rehabilitation outcomes in neurological conditions using virtual reality technology. Dr. Devos is particularly interested in the use of virtual reality as an ecologically valid means of evaluating fitness-to-drive, balance and gait, cognitive workload, task difficulty, and cognitive-motor interference in Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. He uses electro-encephalography and pupillometry to examine neurophysiological responses to cognitive challenging tasks in prodromal or early-stage neurodegenerative diseases. Since inception of the lab in April of 2017, Dr. Devos and Co-Director Dr. Akinwuntan have attracted three affiliate faculty, three PhD students, 2 clinical assistants, and numerous graduate and undergraduate students. Dr. Devos has published over 50 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, has been consistently funded through extramural grants, including NIH, APDA, NMSS, DOT, and Prevent Blindness America, and serves in executive boards of the Neurodegenerative Diseases Networking group of ACRM and the Special Interest Group on Driving of the World Federation for Neurorehabilitation.
